It’s a story about stepping out on faith
It’s a story about what can happen when you’re
“Somewhere listening for your name.”

You will recall the biblical account of Noah and the Great Flood, when a dove flew back to Noah with a fragile twig in its beak from a branch of an olive tree. It represented a signal from God that dry land was nearby.

For some time, Reverend Donald Kelly felt the Lord had placed upon him a vision to start a church. He and his wife Brenda had spent much time in prayer, studying God’s Word and seeking His Will for their lives. On the evening of September 13th, 2006 a small group met at Rev. Kelly’s home where he made it clear that he intended to be obedient and move forward with the vision and establish Olive Branch Community Church.

Through his relationship with Rabbi Gary Fink of Oseh Shalom Synagogue in Laurel, Maryland, Pastor Kelly was able to secure the synagogue for Wednesday night Bible Study and Sunday morning worship service. The inaugural Sunday morning worship service was held on October 1, 2006 at 8AM. Twenty five people were in attendance for this first service.

At the close of that first Sunday morning service, members of the leadership team met for breakfast, and hammered out our first budget -- literally on the back of a paper napkin. The leadership team consisted of Pastor Donald and Brenda Kelly, Carlotta and Brett Tyler, Tina and Jeff Lee, Harold Arledge and Hank and Vivian Boyd. Periodically, the group continued to meet at various homes and began to draft the Constitution and By-Laws for the new church, which were ratified by the newly appointed Board of Elders within the first 3 months of the Church’s existence.

On October 1, 2008 (two years to the date of our first Sunday service at Oseh Salom Synagogue) we bought the historic Lansdale’s home (built in 1870 in Montgomery County, Maryland). The property is located at 416 Olney Sandy Spring Road. It will serve primarily as the Pastor’s Rectory. This 3 plus acre site, nestled in the Quaker village of Sandy Spring Maryland, is believed by some historians to be part of the legacy trail of Harriett Tubman’s Underground Railroad.

Olive Branch Church RectoryAs Olive Branch Community Church continues to grow, we’ve been blessed with new members, baptisms, baby dedications, a Christian Education Ministry, a Music Ministry, the establishment of an ongoing Children’s Moment, a vibrant and active Youth Ministry, the development of a Men’s and Women’s ministry, an Usher ministry, a Finance Ministry, a Missionary Ministry, a Theatre Ministry, a Health Ministry, a Pre-Marital Ministry, and most importantly the opportunity to serve others and to spread the good news of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As we enter the next phase, we hope and pray that you will also be

“Somewhere listening for your name.”
